There’s an astounding beauty that comes with the terror of wildfires. Over the last five years there’ve been three, the last one just two ridges over. It’s not kind, but it’s not cruel either. As a primate with just enough awareness of our responsibility, I can’t call it vengeance. It’s just the land resetting itself, the way it’s always done, long before we started building our little kingdoms in its path. Kingdoms that forget they’re built on borrowed time.
